Out of the following two careers which would be the best path to choose if i want to emigrate the the USA?
I am starting a degree in accounting, when i finish should i become a chartered accountant or should i stay on at uni as a graduate tutor and study for a masters or p.hd (not sure which one they put you through for). So accountant or lecturer in accounting - which would be best for emmigrating?

Answer 1 :
definetely accountant - if ur good n hardworking u'll probably get a job straight away thats what happened to my cousin when she went to the US she's also an accountant but depending on the type of person u r teaching might be more rewarding but bein an accountant will earn u loads
Answer 2 :
dont do it !! worst place on the planet to move to at this point in history .
Answer 3 :
Any good job should do good, as long as you have a good working experience (a vast and qualified one is better). Also, it should help a lot if your English is good. But do visit http://www.travel.state.gov/ for official information about immigration to the U.S. To find out about specific kind of employment visa and requirements, go to http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis/menuitem.5af9bb95919f35e66f614176543f6d1a/?vgnextoid=84096138f898d010VgnVCM10000048f3d6a1RCRD&vgnextchannel=4f719c7755cb9010VgnVCM10000045f3d6a1RCRD Also visit http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis to read more information about different types of employment visas. Try visiting http://www.immigrationportal.com/ It is a great website where you can read others' stories about immigration to the U.S. You can post questions there and they will answer to you. It is a good place for you to ask questions and get advice, but remember that it is not an official website and that they are not lawyers. Besides, it's worth knowing others' stories of success, right???? Good luck!
Answer 4 :
Whatever path you choose you will need experience in your field before you can look for work here. Accountancy may be problematic as you will need to deal with different laws here and would have to study for certification here. If you find work with a multi national company though you might be able to get yourself transferred to the USA. A Master's or PhD certainly won't hurt your case as to get a work visa here you need to be better qualified and more skilled than anyone that can be hired locally. Start off by looking at recruitment pages for American colleges and large accounting firms, you will find out just what kind of qualifications and certification you need. Again if you want to teach here you may need to study the American way of doing things. It's not about finding the best job for emigrating, it's about finding a job where you can excel and make yourself more employable. Good Luck Edit to add. I stumbled over this website today. I think it would be well worth you taking a look. http://www.aicpa.org/

Well, it won't be the National Portrait Gallery, as it's not a series of portraits, is it? It sounds like one of the Hogarth series in the National Gallery round the corner. http://www.nationalgallery.org.uk/paintings/william-hogarth-marriage-a-la-mode

Any organisations offering part time internships for a sixthform/college student in london?
Well I just really need to find a paid part time job on weekends while studying. Can anyone please tell me some organisations such as banks, chartered accountants or solicitors that offer internships to students. Any other type of organisations will be really helpful too.

You aren't going to get a paid internship, you are too young. Besides, offices are not open at the weekends. I suggest you just go for part time work in a local shop or restaurant.

Is their any software on net where I can do this easily?

Is their any software on net where I can do this easily?
Hi, I am a accountant. I am preparing a balance sheet but because of staff shortage and time pressures I cant complete it on time. There is lot of common data with last years which I need not retype and I can manage by editing last year’s balance sheet ? Is their any software on net where I can do this easily??
Software - 4 Answers
People Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
Are you using Microsoft Excel or Open Office equivalent? Create a template file from last years data set. The layout can then be secured and only leave unlocked the input data cells. Everything else will be locked so all you will have to do for the future, is load up the template and enter the data. Then do a Save As and name the file accordingly. The template file needs to be of this read only status. So it will not therefore be overwritten. I am assuming the business is small as they would not be employing you to send queries of this sort to the web. Tell them to buy in a temp and get them to set up templates while they are there. Jonah
Answer 2 :
type accountancy software into your search bar and you should be able to choose from the list of software that suits your needs
Answer 3 :
If your company BUYS a good Accounting App, NOW, like QuickBooks, you can do this magically, NEXT YEAR. They should have done this ages ago. And, QuickBooks may be able to import Excel data from last year, if that's what you used last year, AND, if it was saved in the right format. If not, you will have to load last year's data into QuickBooks manually. But, next year, it'll just be a couple of clicks.
Answer 4 :
1. Copy one XLS file to the new XLS file. 2. In the new XLS file, update the year and any other data you need. 3. Done.

my friend told me you can get out of tax at 17?

my friend told me you can get out of tax at 17?
She signed an agreement with an accountant that at 17 if your in full time education (which we are) you don't have to pay tax? She said it was on 33 hrs per week, but what if you work more than that, can you still get 33 hrs work non/un-taxed? As I want to work in the summer, but I will work over 33 hours a week.
United Kingdom - 7 Answers
People Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
Your allowed to earn so much before you have to pay tax! I think its about £3500 then your taxed!
Answer 2 :
I didn't think anyone in full time education got taxed. I didn't when I worked over the summer hols when I was at uni... I was doing about 35 hours a week on average
Answer 3 :
If you are in full time education then you do not pay tax on earnings, so long as you earn under a certain amount. You can just ask your employer for a form to fill out. If you've been taxed already then when you fill out and hand in the form you should get that tax back at the end of the tax year in April.
Answer 4 :
if you are in further education no matter what your age and just work evenings and holidays then yes your friend is correct you do not have to pay tax as long as you complete a student form and do not earn over the tax limit for the current tax year, this year is £5225.
Answer 5 :
I don't quite understand how the accountant has agreed this. You will pay tax after you have earned over £5225.00 (the basic threshold), unless you provide your employer with the appropriate form:- FORM P38(s) You do not have to deduct tax from the pay of a student who works for you solely during a holiday if • this form is filled in on the back, and • the student's pay in your employment does not exceed £5,225. Where the student's pay in your employment exceeds £5,225 you must • deduct tax using code 'OT week 1/month 1' in accordance with paragraphs 110 and 111 of the booklet CWG2 Employer Further Guide to PAYE and NICs. If 5 April falls during the period of employment, the student must fill in two of these forms, one for the tax year up to 5 April, and one for the new tax year from 6 April. If you think you are due a refund, you will need to apply using Form P50 Have a look at this link and see where your circumstances fit. http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/allforms.shtml
Answer 6 :
the other answers are a bit muddled. First of all everyone pays tax, no matter what their age, if their income goes above a certain amount. For everyone under 65, that is £5225 in the current year. This £5225 is divided by 52 to give you £100 tax free each week. Anything over that is taxed at 10% and then 22%. The form P38(s) which someone else mentions can be signed only if you are only working during the school/college holidays. If you work during term time, you cannot sign this form. The idea behind this form is that if you sign to say your income will be under £5225 for the year, the employer does not deduct tax and you dont have to go to the bother of reclaiming it. Its not the number of hours you work which is key, but the amount you earn - as I have said above anything over £5225 in a year is taxable.
Answer 7 :
I do not think it has anything to do with your age. It is based on how much you earn in yearly wages. There is a minimum amount you can earn before you are required to pay taxes. I am sure if you call the IRS, they can help you. Their number is 1-800-829-1040. Good luck!

Anyone else consuming large amounts of red bull, coffee and pro plus to get thru exams?
I am planning an all nighter trying to come to terms with the concepts of correcting errors, the journal and incomplete records!! Errr what made me think I wanted to be an Accountant? This is only the first year :( I can do it, I've just left it late to revise lol. I got 83%, 81%, 68% and 67% in my mid terms.

Ohh yes
Answer 2 :
nesquik, woooo!
Answer 3 :
Please be careful how much redbull you drink.....it can cause heart problems. I am an accountant and I've been where you are but a lot of years ago.
Answer 4 :
gotta love the red bull. know a guy that use to distribute in the college library.. leaves a book on the table someone opens it and its made to hold a red bull inside.. genius!
Answer 5 :
yep, but make use of that time. it is too easy to be awake and blow off your time watching t.v. or something or get distracted.
Answer 6 :
It's a bad idea to drink red bull, coffee, and take pro plus. You could make yourself very ill doing that. Try to get plenty of sleep because pulling an all nighter is not the way to go :( If you're struggling to do your first year exams then you might be doing the wrong course tbh.
Answer 7 :
lol...it gets much harder dear....but if you get thru the first year you are prepared for what awaits you...I think I drank the equivalent of the hudson river worth of coffee...good luck.
Answer 8 :
My daughters friend did this and was so hopped up he couldn't set still and focus on what he had to do. Caffeine can make you jumpy as well as awake. If this is your first year of college, switch majors now. My nephew had his heart set on being an engineer. One semester in college taught him it was not for him at all. Now he is an accounting major. lol
Answer 9 :
You should never pull all nighters. This semester, I pulled like a week's worth of them and really regret it because I did poorly, and that's just like adding insult to injury. This however was when I HAD A.D.D and really slow processing speed. Now it's basically just show up, do the work and go home. So, if you really find lots of those are necessary to keep up, then well, you might just have something wrong with you.
Answer 10 :
I can't afford to buy those things to keep myself awake lol but I'll be up all night finishing course work!

Tax returns: how do i work out how much i owe?
This is my first year of doing my tax returns and I can't afford an accountant? I have my totals of earnings and expended, but I do i know the sums to work out how much I owe?

Answer 1 :
Just fill in the details on line. It will tell you. Just make sure you claim as much as possible to avoid over taxing. It really is easy. Dont worry - its quite simple.
Answer 2 :
I think that tax collection department helps people in filing their tax returns. Just fill the form and you will be able to get the rest of the guidelines online.
Answer 3 :
If you have registered to do it all on line the computer works out a figure for you and you pay there and then by direct debit. If any adjustment is made to that figure they then write and tell you if you owe more or are due a refund. They do not notify of refunds on line and that is spam.

what job has more maths in it, engineering or accounting?

what job has more maths in it, engineering or accounting?
i want to be either an accountant or an engineer, but i dont really like maths that much. so i am going for the career which has less maths. so my question is which job will have more maths in it accounting or engineering.
Engineering - 7 Answers
People Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
accounting
Answer 2 :
Engineering of course. In engineering you need to use the principles from Linear Algebra, Calculus, Partial Differential Equations even Discrete math. You really need to understand the advanced math concepts and should have the capability to do math mental calculation and math modeling/programming in computer. . In Accounting you just need to understand basic algebra, but you need to do fast and precise mental calculations. if you hate math, avoid both.
Answer 3 :
there are several disciplines of engineering and some do NOT require maths or calculations. on the other hand, accounting cannot avoid the use of maths, even if it is generally basic maths. so select an engineering discipline that does not require (much) maths.
Answer 4 :
Engineering. Accountancy is just adding up
Answer 5 :
Accounting is more basic math, but an accountant is going to use math every day. To get an engineering degree, you take very difficult, high-level math courses. If you say that you don't like math, you won't make it. It's hard. Very hard. However, as an engineer, in my particular job, I rarely use any of the high-level math I've learned. But you need to be able to do the math to get through school.
Answer 6 :
Engineering has calculus, statistics, algebra, and optimisation. Accountancy has sums. However, if you go in to actuarial science, which is a specialised branch of accountancy, you'll do a lot of very heavy duty statistics and regression modelling.
Answer 7 :
engineering. accounting is basic maths, adding, multiplying and in the worst scenario finding percentage. in engineering requires more complicated maths like algebra, logarithms, geometry ect.

Is it easy to get my tax refunds myself?

Is it easy to get my tax refunds myself?
I was paying 30% tax for a few months and have now sorted out my tax numbers and stuff and am down to the normal 20%. Would i be able to get the money im owed myself or do i just pay an accountant to do it for me? (expensive or no?) Cheers in advance Im self employed by the way (should have added that in, sorry)
United Kingdom - 6 Answers
People Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
Your next payslip should sort it out. otherwise it's dead easy to get a tax refund. just fill in (last year's)? tax return
Answer 2 :
I've had the same problem myself a few times. They will eventually sort it out themselves, but this will usually be after the end of the tax year. If it is a large amount they sent you a cheque in the post, or for smaller amounts they give you a new tax code so you pay less tax next year. You can go down to your local tax office and ask them, but as tax is worked out on a yearly basis you would normally have to wait till April to get any money from them
Answer 3 :
If you're employed ask your employer to sort it out. Alternatively, or if you're self employed just ring your local tax office. There's really no need to pay an accountant to do this.
Answer 4 :
It depends if you are employed or self-employed, and you don't tell us which. If employed, you don't need an accountant. Contact tax office and ask what information is needed. I can't be more specific without further information. If you are self-employed, you won't get any refund until HMRC receive your Tax Return. Depending on complexity, you may need an accountant for that. An accountant would probably save you more money than he would cost.
Answer 5 :
If you are due a refund, there are 2 ways of claiming your tax back: (1) You can claim the tax back by contacting your local tax office, providing a P91 form, as well as your P60/P45s and P85/P86 if applicable. (2) Alternatively you can use an agency to help you. An agency such as: http://www.taxfix.co.uk they charge a fee once they have obtained a refund. Both have advantages and disadvantages. Just make sure that you get all the tax that you are due back and do not let the government keep it.
Answer 6 :
The answer to this depends on how complicated your tax affairs are. The route to a potential tax refund also depends on whether you are taxed under PAYE or Self Assessment or both. An accountant can certainly help and might also be able to make other tax savings for you. However if you want to get a refund yourself you can contact HM Revenue and Customs directly. Their contact details will be on your latest tax return or can be found at www.hmrc.gov.uk. Didn't pay any taxes for independent contractor works for the last six months. What to do?
Hi All, I am a freelance software testing engineer and by working on a project for the last six months, i made around 12K. I worked on it from May to October. I want to pay my taxes now as I got paid and I want to do it myself or through an accountant. Please suggest me how to do it and even i lost my invoice, so i don't have any relevant paper of my income. Regards, Sam
United Kingdom - 4 Answers
People Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
You wont need the invoice for you have the cheque or at least a record of it in your bank statement! You need an accountant. When you have found him/her, he/she will tell you what you need to give them and what they are gonna charge you and you can turn it all over to him/her! How nice not to have to worry about it. However do make sure that they actually do the work and pay your tax bill, for the responsibility is still yours!
Answer 2 :
Get duplicate invoices if you can't get someone to fill your taxes for you ,some will do it ,some will not.You will have quite a few dollars to pay in taxes i hope you saved some.
Answer 3 :
First reconstruct your income. Ideally, you deposited each payment in full in a checking or savings account and didn't do cash back deposits so they are short. In the US, what you need to do is figure out if you must pay estimated taxes if you will owe more that $1,000 in taxes next April 15th. If you have no other income or a similar amount for the rest of the year, you are unlikely to owe more and can just file. You have missed the first 3 estimated dates and thus will have to pay by January 15th if you are going to pay. You need to work out the Schedule C to see what expenses you can deduct and the SE for Social Security taxes. As an independent contractor, you have to pay both sides of the tax (what the employer pays plus what the employer deducts) but as a self employed person, you can deduct about half of it on the Schedule C just like an employer does. It isn't hard, just tedious.
Answer 4 :
Calculate your gross income and deduct all of your buiness expense and file a form 1040ES for the estimated tax due. You will owe 15.3% for your self-employment social security and medicare plus income tax which varies based on exemptions, deductions and other income aside from that work. The company you worked for should issue a 1099MISC, so they would have to keep a record of what they paid you, so you could call their accounting department to see what you made. You could also add your bank deposits if you deposited the money. You could look through your bank statements and check stubs to see what your income and expenses were.

what is partenership profit and how do you get it.is it up to the person who banks to pay it out?
what is partenership profit and how do you obtain it? is it what is left in the business account after paying the accountant and taxman at the end of the tax year?
Other - Business & Finance - 1 Answers

Answer 1 :
In a word, "yes" (of course any bills due etc. also need to be accounted for == so you can't just take out half the bank balance each or the business will be bust as soon as the next bill comes in) When you signed the Partnership Agreement it should have been stated how profits would be split and (when paid out) .. It usual for Partners to agree in advance that any profits for the X initial years will be retained to grow the business (and they may agree only to withdraw X% of the profit in future ..)

Answer 1 :
If you were legally a partner in this business you should be able to contact the accountant and he will tell you the situation with your profit. Although your partner had the business relationship with the accountant as partner in the business you will have been paying half the fees and you will have the right to ask about your affairs. Ultimately you should sort this out with your business partner though if you can agree a settlement without taking legal action it will probably cost you less. The accountant will be in the best position to tell you what you are owed.

Can Accountants in a company go on strike?

Can Accountants in a company go on strike?
I'm belong ACCA & ATT (i pay my membership fees). Do student members have the same rights? Also can you strike in the private sector (I see public sector workers go on strike over pay through there unions) ?

Answer 1 :
If your not part of a collective bargaining agreement with the employer like most people who belong to unions, then going on strike will not really have any leverage. You will simply be fired and replaced by someone else.
Answer 2 :
Why would they. If they do not like the pay and conditions they can look elsewhere for a job. Accountants are professionals as are Doctors and Solicitors. Never heard of any of them going on strike. UK
Answer 3 :
ACCA and ATT are private organizations who can make rules for their members any way they like. If they choose to give student members the same rights as other members, that's fine, but they don't have to do so. Yep, accountants can strike in the private sector, just like any other employee. But your employer can also fire you if you do. So, if you absolutely must strike, make sure you and the other employees truly are indispensable and not replaceable, and that the strike will not cause the employer to go out of business immediately.
Answer 4 :
ACCA is not a union. It is a professional body, very different. It is a professional regulator, nothing to do with workers rights! I'm not so up on ATT (Association of Tax Technicians?) but don't think they are a union either.

I'm self employed. Will an estate agent accept my books done by a chartered accountant as proof of my income?

I'm self employed. Will an estate agent accept my books done by a chartered accountant as proof of my income?
I've found the most incredible house to rent and I want to move in asap. The only thing is I'm a self employed teacher and I get my money in cash from my private students. My credit history/ bank statements don't look fantastic because I got married to a man a lot older than me and he's always dealt with the finances, and I've always just paid my way in the household with cash. I've also been really sloppy and I haven't done my tax returns for 4 years. Would an estate agent accept my books verified by a chartered accountant? To prove that I can pay the rent weekly. Thank you 17 hours ago - 3 days left to answer. Additional Details And, I wanted to sign a contract for a year, but do you think an estate agent would do a shorter "trial" contract, say for three months, just to see how things go if they weren't too happy with my proof of earning's?

I dont see why not,try it you have nothing to loose
Answer 2 :
Hello, (ANS) YES! that should be fine. Because if your accounts have been professionally done by a qualified chartered accounant then that should be acceptible as proof of your income. Other than this I cannot see what else they could need bank statements would be acceptible but thats going abit far perhaps? **As long as you can verify your source of income or investments that should be enough proof of how much of a risk you would represent to the person or company you are renting from. They are probably being extra cautious or paranoid in the present economic climate. **I guess they just want to make sure you can comfortable cover the actual rental payments. Kind Regards Ivan
Answer 3 :
If you haven't done any tax returns for 4 years you have been breaking the law. An Accountant will not sign off your books as 'true' as you might owe money to HMRC. Have you registered as self employed?, this has to be done 28 days before you start earning. I think you need to talk to an Accountant pronto. As for the house, highly unusual for anyone to give a 3 month contract.

Answer 1 :
Hi, First of all - sorry if there are any mistakes or i dont make anything easier. But this is how i take things to be... First of all, lets take March: 56 hours x £6 per hour = £336 14 days x £10 a day = (£140) Equals £196 owing to you. However, you received £178, therefore you are owed £18. Continue this onto the following months, using the same method. However, certain months are slightly different, like May for instance. 44 Hours x £6 per hour = £264 11 Days x £10 per day = (£110) Equals £154 owing to you. However, as you received £230, you therefore owe CP £76. If you do this for each month, you can come to a running total as follows. In total, Nursery (you?) are owed £748.46. In total, CP is owed (£261.90) Therefore, you are owed £486.56 (748.46 - 261.90) So, Total money received = £1923.44 You should have received = £2410.00 Payroll total = £2446.84 Sons fees = £1190.00 All picked up from individual monthly break downs. Is this what you are after? If not, let me know and i can try again. I hope this has helped a little! Ant

Dishonest NHS Accountant Jailed - end of the matter?

Dishonest NHS Accountant Jailed - end of the matter?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/essex/7315550.stm My first thought was, good hes getting what he deserves - but when you look at why he did it... It seem more that he lied to keep his job having been asked to do the impossible by his managers...

The buck never reaches the top, you know that.
Answer 2 :
Damn, it's a tough call isn't it? Seems like six of one and half a dozen of the other to me.
Answer 3 :
I don't think he lied to keep his job. He may have lied to get the bonus!! Even then I think that not to be the case. I think the creative accounting was to present a trust which was meeting its targets and would reflect favourabley to inspection. That was wrong. If trusts are unable to provide the services required because of insufficient funding this must be made transparant. If they make a surplus their budget will be reduced in the next fiscal year an services will suffer. Its from that perspective and that alone I believe he did wrong.
Answer 4 :
Yes it's not fair is it politicians don't get prosecuted for real fraud where's the justice.
Answer 5 :
The Government wants cuts. He made it look better than it was by juggling money. The NHS is now not the service it used to be. Everyone is afraid of losing their jobs. Too many at the top and not enough doing the hands on. Think there is more worthy peeps needing jailed though. Half of them in the Government for starters.
Answer 6 :
Congratulate the government and their targets.
Answer 7 :
If every company accountant was jailed for 'creative accounting', there would be none left! Minimising profits is the staple diet of accountants, to cut tax liability. Maximising profits is just as bad because it gives a false impression of the true value and efficiency of a company.
