I am thinking of becoming an accountant but I have terrible communication skills. Any suggestions?
I am thinking of studying an AAT and have been doing my research. I have been looking at job adverts for trainee accountants and all are specifically saying "must have excellent communication skills" or "good interpersonal skills". The problem is I have a stammer and this is really beginning to stop me from progressing myself. I have tried speech therapy but only works to certain extent. I really want to do this so is there any type of role within this industry where I can work as an accountant for a company behind the scenes without having to deal face to face with customers all day long? As you can imagine that would be rather hard work and very uncomfortable for me having to deal with the stress and embarrasment everyday. Any suggestion would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

Answer 1 :
being an accountant, esp not high up in an organization, is probably the least requiremment to communicate in an office. i know an accountant who also stammer before joining office until the office management sent him for theraphy and he improved quite a bit.
Answer 2 :
you shouldn't let your stammer hold you back. there are many professionals in your situation. Also your communication skills are not based on your verbal skills, they're are based on the way you communicate. whether you're a personable person, customer focused etc. I say go for it, it will help with your confidence to do something you want to do. I wish you luck.
